In remembrance of Pearl Harbor, I thought it appropriate to write about a certain incident that reminded me that racism, stupidity and ig’nance is nowhere close to being dead.
Several years ago my mom decided she needed to revamp her perm. I told her that perms went out of style back in 1989 but she insisted that I go with her anyway. I perused the magazines filled with 70′s hair-dos while the woman who was perming her hair went on a tangent about Pearl Harbor. I thought it was a strange topic because we were nowhere near the Pearl Harbor anniversary and there was nothing that my mom had said to provoke such a discussion.
Finally, she looked at my mom and whispered: “Honey? were any of your family members involved in the attack?”
At which point I got up and hollered “SHE’S MEXICAN NOT ASIAN! YOU IG’NANT BITCH!”
